Strategy

Quite a bit of the fun in Cosmic Rift is developing your own strategies. A wealth of information can be found on the message boards from players who have discovered devious ways to destroy each other. Here are some tips to get you started however.

The most important thing to remember in Cosmic Rift is that your energy is your life. Most weapons consume energy when you fire, and when you run out of energy you die. So it is important to judge when it is wiser not to fire a weapon in order to conserve that precious last bit of energy, which might allow you to escape from a bad situation. Note, however, that the damage you inflict on an enemy with a hit from your weapon is typically more than the energy cost to fire it.

Another useful tool in both offensive and defensive situations is the Repulsor. This utility repels any enemies and weapons near you, sending them flying away from you. Perfect for when you are getting overwhelmed and a shot that might kill you is incoming. There is also an effective technique of dropping mines and repelling your enemies into them. This move requires some skill to execute, as repelling someone into the exact position you want them isn't always easy.

Momentum plays a big role in firing and dodging weapons. Moving backwards causes weapons to exit the ship much slower than when you are moving forwards. Use this to your advantage. Also, some weapons bounce off of walls, lining these bounces up with your enemy is often crucial.

Lastly, there are the gas clouds and gravity wells. The gas clouds are excellent places to hide when ambushing an enemy or recharging lost energy. Also, mines tend to be hidden well in these clouds, so be careful when you enter them. Gravity wells, are good for a clean getaway since they warp you to a random location on the map. If you are getting overwhelmed, jump into one of these wells to escape.
